We faced off this year in the schoolyard, standing on last year’s slippery dead grass. We haven’t had enough rain yet this spring to green it up. I stood in front on the teacher side of the rope, and kicked a small hole in the ground to brace myself. The sixth graders opposite me watched, looking a little bit worried. The teachers’ main advantage is experience. This is an event we participate in each year, but the kids have to wait until they come of age.
The Staff knows that when the whistle blows we have to pull hard and fast, taking the kids by surprise before they gain traction and a sense of their own power. In the 10 years I’ve done this, we’ve always won the first pull, as we did this year. The second pull - because the kids always demand a rematch - is a little more challenging, and never a sure thing for either side. This year, the teachers prevailed on round 2 after a struggle in which the rag tied to the rope’s middle wandered back and forth over the mark on the ground a few times. Round three is very much an iffy matter for the teachers, especially after a hard fought second round. This year we hung on, and for a few moments it looked like we’d pull them across the mark, but we couldn’t.
fter I cycled off ALA Council, I decided that I wanted to step back some and spend sometime reacquainting with my local library association in Vermont, so I didn’t renew my ALA membership. I joined VLA at the conference — where I gave two talks, or I gave half of two talks — which meant that my annual fee will only pay for seven months of membership (all memberships expire on 31dec. That said, membership is cheap). I didn’t feel obligated to join since I’m not technically a librarian for my job but I felt it would be a good idea. Before I officially joined, I was still receiving the newsletter and I was on the mailing list, so I’m not sure what joining technically gets me except the ability to be elected to an office which is not something I’m seriously considering at this point.

One of the key issues for a sales manager is how he will STRUCTURE the department. Sales departments tend to be very FLAT – there is one boss and many subordinates at the same position. For many organizations, this is not the optimal structure, and tends to lead to problems as the company grows. Modern sales managers like to delegate more responsibility by appointing sales representatives to different positions and specialties. A good sales manager will organize his department into specialties or territories, and may appoint supervisors, assistant managers, or team leaders.
Ten minutes later, he has not returned. Nor in fifteen or twenty. Where has he gone to? Thirty minutes passes and, finally, his visage reappears in the distance, triumphant. He sits down and delicately hands Rachel two plastic sheaths. Inside are white, fuzzy slippers.
White fuzzy slippers?! From the Kempinski Hotel? How luxurious! Sir Adrian, it turns out, had a student of English who worked the lobby. How’s that for 关系？And so, she cheered on the footballers the whole night through in her comfortable-as-sin white, fuzzy Kempinski slippers. That is, until Chelsea took ManU in the end. At which point her overly drunk, visibly unhappy comrades decided the pub was too depressing and left for greener bars. I mean pastures.
